Kodiak Alutiiq Dictionary
We are pleased to share this online dictionary database in its early stages. It is a work in progress, and some spellings may be edited from how they currently appear. We are recording more words with Elders and still linking audio and visual files to some words. As we learn and grow our vocabulary so will this list forever be growing. We appreciate your patience.
Search our on-line dictionary for common words, a specific word you are interested in learning, or review an entire category of words. Click the Alutiiq word to see a flashcard with an image and audio clip.
If searching in Alutiiq for a word that contains a "Russian R", enter this character as alt-r or option-r on your keyboard.
News: Search for "lost word" to see a list of recent additions to the dictionary, contributed through a National Park Services Tribal Heritage Preservation Project administered by Native Village of Afognak (#02-01-NA0259). Visit the Native Village of Afognak Tribe's archives website for story recordings, transcripts, and select biographies from this project as well.
